Obesity is increasing in the United States, and it is true there is some increased risk for developing heart disease and diabetes.

There was a landmark study done in 2008 by Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University. It concluded there were many overweight people who were very healthy, and a very large group of normal weight Americans that had cardiovascular risks. Landmark studies tend to be large, and predict trends in the nation’s health.

This study was a nationally representative sample of 5,440 Americans. They were divided into three groups-normal weight, overweight, and obese. Meatobolism and six heart disease risk factors such as hypertension, elevated triglycerides and low levels of high density lipoprotein cholesterol were checked. Adults from the testing were rated as metabolically healthy or metabolically unhealthy.

From the study Dr. Wildman and her team extrapolated that 23.5 percent of normal weight adult Americans, 16.3 million are at major risk for heart disease. The overweight adults came in at 51.3 percent metabolically healthy meaning no risk of heart disease and no diabetes. The obese people came in at 31.7 percent metabolically healthy.

The conclusion of the study was that it could not be generalized that there was a link between heart disease and obesity. It seems the amount of physical activity and what type of fat was in the abdominal cavity had more to do with heart disease than weight. There were conclusions to a lesser degree on diabetes and weight as well as participants age.

The facts are not every person who is overweight is unhealthy, and not every normal weight person is healthy. Our focus truly should be on health, not weight.
